The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has urged citizens to report cases of people moving around collecting registration slips serial numbers from registered voters warning that those involved were violating the Electoral Act and Section 156 (c) of the constitution.
The press release that was issued late yesterday followed numerous reports from opposition political parties purporting that Zanu-PF members were allegedly moving around collecting registration serial numbers mainly in rural areas as a way of intimidating voters ahead of the general elections which are due in a few months.
In the statement, the independent electoral body acknowledged that it had received several reports of people moving around collecting serial numbers of registration slips from registered voters nationwide.
“Following such reports we would like to notify all Zimbabweans that it is an offense for anyone to collect /record registration slips serial numbers, the offense boarder on intimidation, impersonation of ZEC officials and trespassing should the person enter your premises and are in violation of Electoral Act and Section 156 (c) of the constitution among others”, ZEC warned in a statement.
On Wednesday during the question and answer segment, MDC-T legislators quizzed the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Ziyambi Ziyambi over the government policy on people who were moving around collecting registration slips serial numbers.
Ziyambi chose to dodge the question blaming ZEC, political parties and civil society for not undertaking comprehensive voter education before the voter registration commenced.
“What the Hon. Member is referring to is an issue that could have been addressed if everyone involved in the process; be it ZEC, political parties and civic society undertook the process of voter education because the process of collecting voter registration slips does not impact in any way in the voting process or in the electoral process. The process of voter education would empower the people so that they appreciate that those voter registration slips do not in any way impact on the electoral process”, Ziyambi said.
The leader of government business in parliament informed parliamentarians that they had already engaged ZEC and agreed that those who were not comfortable with the situation must engage those who were doing the practice to stop.
During an interview yesterday in Davos Switzerland at the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF), President Emmerson Mnangagwa assured the global community that the upcoming elections were going to be credible, free and fair.
