Politician and former Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) legislator for Chimanimani constituency Roy Leslie Bennett who was affectionately known as Pachedu meaning (Between us) has died.
According to news filtering through social media, Bennett and his wife Heather Bennett were confirmed to have been tragically killed in a helicopter crash in New Mexico on Thursday.
MDC-T Vice President and Kuwadzana East legislator Nelson Chamisa was the first to break the news on his social media Twitter handle when he tweeted;
I’m devastated as I have just received tragic news about Roy Bennet and wife’s involvement in a helicopter crash while in Canada.

Lawyer and founding member of the MDC David Coltart also expressed shock upon the sad passing on of Bennett.
I have just confirmed from three separate reliable sources that Roy and Heather Bennett have been tragically killed in a helicopter accident in North America. I am devastated- they were two of Zimbabwe’s greatest patriots. My condolences are extended to their family & friends.

Former Finance Minister during the 2013 inclusive government Tendai Biti tweeted that the death of Bennet was a loss to mankind and a blow to the struggle.
Just learnt of the tragic passing on in Canada of Heather and Roy Pachedu Badze Bennett. What a serious loss to mankind What a blow to Charles and the rest of the family . What a blow to our struggle . I can’t believe I can’t believe I will never speak to you again Badze !

During his active involvement in opposition politics, Bennet served as the treasurer of MDC.
On 28 June 2005, Bennett was released from Chikurubi Prison after spending eight months of his twelve-month sentence in custody for assaulting Patrick Chinamasa the then incumbent justice minister.
Bennett, who could have turned 61 on February 16 next month leaves behind two children Casey and Charles.
