President Emmerson Mnangagwa has given functions and responsibilities to the two Vice Presidents Retired General Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi who took the oath of office yesterday.
In a statement to the media, Acting Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Justine Mupamhanga said the assignments are with immediate effect.
“…His Excellency the President, Cde E.D Mnangagwa, has duly assigned Honourable Vice President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Guveya Dominic Nyikadzino Chiwenga to administer the Ministry of Defence and War Veterans Affairs.
“Honourable Vice President Kembo Campbell Dugishi Mohadi will administer the National Peace and Reconciliation Portfolio,” he said.
The appointments are in terms of Section 99 of the Constitution, which says the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe may assign functions to Vice Presidents to assist him/her in the discharge of his/her functions and perform any other functions, including the administration of any Ministry or Department or Act of Parliament.
General (Rtd) Chiwenga is expected not struggle much with his new portfolio as he was Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces before being elevated to the Presidium.
Vice President Kembo Mohadi will, however, have to be at his best as he has taken over a portfolio that gave former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko a torrid time in trying to push the Truth and Reconciliation Bill.
