Kembo Mohadi – what we know

 By Buhle Tshavango.

Besides being newly appointed  Vice President of Zimbabwe, Kembo Dugish Campbell Mohadi is also making headlines for benefitting from a widely publicised prophecy given by Malawian Prophet Shepherd Bushiri about his ascendency.

However, history records that his rise in rank has been a long time coming, owing to his contributions to the country’s liberation struggle and his seniority in the original Zapu.

Here is what we know about him.

The appointment of the 68 year old former minister of state security as Vice President is largely taunted as a goal scored for Cde Mohadi who has harboured such ambitions for years and has openly voiced his intentions.

Following the death of former Vice President John Nkomo in January 2013, Mohadi openly contested for the vacant post declaring that he was a suitable candidate for promotion.

There is only one vacancy and that is the VP’s post. I have offered myself for the post. I am not cheap and I am for the big race. Who doesn’t want power? We all want power; even if you were to be nominated or elected, would you refuse? I will be equally happy and I am ready for the game,” Mohadi was quoted to have said.

The odds were howerer not in his favour as ironically former President Mugabe opted for  his justice minister now President Emmerson Mnangagwa as his preferred first vice President and Phelekezela Mphoko as the second vice president in December 2014.

Vice President Mohadi who is also doubling as the Minister of Defence, Security and War Veterans is reported to have joined the liberation struggle at the age of 27 in 1972 when he left for Zambia. He is then said to have migrated to Moscow, Russia where he received his military training.

Having previously served as Deputy Minister of Local Government, he was appointed as Minister of Home Affairs in August 2002, In 2008, Mohadi was nominated by the ruling party as its candidate for the House of Assembly seat from Beitbridge East constituency a position he clinched in a landslide victory.

During the time of the Inclusive Government in 2009 Mohadi shared the Home Affairs ministry with Giles Mutsekwa of the MDC-T, however, after the 2013 elections, Mohadi was re-appointed as Minister of Home Affairs on 10 September 2013.

2015 saw him being moved to the post of Minister of National Security and in November 2016 he made headlines after a video of him went viral in which he was seen attending a church service hosted by controversial prophet Bushiri where it was prophesised that he would be promoted and wear a crown to which an agreeable Mohadi nodded and said ‘I receive’.

VP Mohadi is alleged to have organised the murder of his wife’s lover, Strover Mutonhori in 1999, he has also been fingered in some business scandal where he tried to remove the owner of some business in which he was a shareholder.

Mohadi is credited for initiating talks with the South African Interior Affairs ministry in 2014 regarding the visa and passports issuing on Zimbabwean citizens residing in that country.

2017 saw him being named Minister of Defence, Security and War Veterans and subsequently Vice President of Zimbabwe and second secretary of Zanu PF.

Mohadi who hails from Matebeleland region is Venda and his appointment has served to prove that not every Matabeleland politician is Ndebele as Venda like other minority groups seemed to have been sidelined with Zimbabwe’s narrative being presented as the Shona versus the Ndebele.

He is also among Mugabe’s ministers who were duped by a Rotina Mavhunga that dieseal was oozing from a rock in Chinhoyi
